1. What is RevaluElectricals?
RevaluElectricals is a new collection service for unwanted small electrical items in Brighton & Hove. The service is powered by two circular economy companies; Tech-Takeback (data security takeback experts) and The ZeroNet (the logistics technology app), with support from Brighton & Hove City Council, as part of the Recycle Your Electricals Campaign.
2. Why should I use the RevaluElectricals service?
RevaluElectricals is a circular economy based service designed to maximise the reuse value of unwanted electrical items.
It’s convenient
We come to you – you don’t have to travel, drive, park or queue anywhere. We use our electric van to carry out a free collection of items from your doorstep while remaining compliant with COVID-19 social distancing measures.
You will be able to enter your preferred availability when you register to download the app or at the time of making your collection request, together with any special delivery instructions. The app will then offer you a collection slot based on your stated preference which you can choose to accept or reject in the “My Collections” area of the app. Should you reject the offer, your request will be placed back into the queue and you will be offered another collection slot until there is one that works for you. If you miss the offer or take no action to engage with the offer, you will be offered another slot in the future based upon your availability preferences.
Environmental benefit
It takes a huge amount of energy and natural resources to produce electrical items - reusing and responsibly recycling these items allows us to reduce the environmental impact of the manufacturing process.
Community benefit
We work to give a second-life to unwanted technology for the benefit of digitally- excluded members of the community - providing access to education and social interaction throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. For other (non-tech) small electricals, our redistribution partners work to find deserving new homes for them.
Data security
For your protection and peace of mind, we use a secure data-erasure process to permanently remove all data stored on your devices at no charge to you.
From 1st May 2021, we will no longer be providing data erasure certificates as standard. Our data erasure process continues to operate to the same rigorous standards and data-bearing items will always be professionally erased. Certificates are available upon request - please email admin@techtakeback.co.uk for further details and to request a certificate.
Our website explains why ‘restore to factory settings’, formatting the drive, taking a hammer to the item and other methods do not totally remove the data which means information can be recovered by those with malintent or accidentally upon reuse (and of course the more destructive methods prevent reuse and don’t protect the environment - core values of RevaluElectricals).
It’s easy and free!
Many people have taken the opportunity to declutter their homes during the lockdown period - our collection service makes it easy to responsibly dispose of the electrical items cluttering your home while helping other members of the community who have a use for them.
3. Where is RevaluElectricals available?
In November 2020, the RevaluElectricals service was launched across the city of Brighton & Hove. We are grateful for the generosity of the city’s residents and we anticipate that demand for booking a collection of small electricals via the app will be high.
We thank you in advance for your understanding that at busy periods, there may be a delay between you requesting your collection and our driver collecting your items, however, you will be kept informed throughout the process and collection offers made to you will be based upon the availability preferences you entered into the app and optimisation of collection routes to ensure that we can be as efficient as possible. For details of how we will ensure you are kept updated, please see our Guide to Messages from The ZeroNet.
Check out our Service Updates page for up-to-date services, or sign up to our newsletter for regular updates.
4. How can I access the RevaluElectricals service?
RevaluElectricals collections can be booked via The ZeroNet app. Use the links below to download from the relevant app store.
The ZeroNet on App Store for Apple devices
The ZeroNet on Play Store for Android devices
5. How does it work?
The RevaluElectricals collection service works in 2 stages:
First, use The ZeroNet app to request a collection of your unwanted small electrical items (some helpful tips in this video).
Second, a Tech-Takeback driver will carry out a non-contact collection of your items from your doorstep on the scheduled date. For more information on what we do with your items and any data on your data-bearing devices, see the Tech-Takeback General FAQs and Resident Guide.
6. What items can I donate to RevaluElectricals?
RevaluElectricals collections are available for most small electrical items. For a full list of accepted items, please see the Resident Guide.
Unfortunately, we are unable to accept the following items at this time:
7. How do I add more items to an outstanding collection request?
Once you have submitted a collection request via The ZeroNet, you'll be able to see the details of your request in the "My Collections" area of the app. If you forget to include an item, or find something else that you would like to donate before your collection is scheduled, you can add these items as a "New Collection". Any outstanding collections will be merged when a collection offer is made, so you won't have to book two collections for your items.
8. Do I need to prepare my items for donation with RevaluElectricals?
Making a donation to RevaluElectricals is easy, but there’s a couple of things you might need to do to prepare your items for donation (especially for data-bearing items such as mobile phones, laptops & PCs).
Following these steps helps us to obtain the maximum reuse value from your donation:
For further details on each of these steps, please see the Resident Guide.
9. What happens to the personal data on my devices?
All items collected by RevaluElectricals are taken to a secure operations facility managed by the data security experts from Tech-Takeback. Any data-bearing items, including mobile phones, laptops, PCs, memory storage devices (and much more) are taken through a rigorous data erasure process.
Once you make a donation, it is not possible to recover the data stored on those devices. All data is permanently removed, and it is against our policy to recover data from devices prior to the erasure process.
For more information on data security and our erasure process, please visit the Data Security webpage.
10. I have a large volume of items to donate, can I use the service?
On each collection route, we visit multiple residents to optimise efficiency. This means that our collection capacity is limited (we want to ensure no-one misses out on the opportunity to donate.)
If we do not have space in our electric van for all of your items on the day, we are happy to arrange to return to you for a dedicated collection and our driver will arrange for you to be contacted by a member of our Operations team to arrange the collection.
If you have a particularly large number of items to donate, please contact admin@techtakeback.co.uk who will be able to book a dedicated collection for you.
Please note that the RevaluElectricals service is for residents only. For collections from businesses, please use the see our Business Services.
11. I have items that you don't accept - what can I do with them?
Unfortunately, there are some items that we cannot accept (including printers, CRT monitors, personal hygiene products, batteries). We are also unable to accept large items such as refrigerators, ovens, large TVs.
If your items are in working order, try giving them away on Freegle.
For broken items, visit recycleyourelectricals.org.uk to find your nearest recycling point, or arrange a Bulky Waste Collection with Brighton & Hove City Council.
12. Once I have requested a collection via The ZeroNet, how long will I have to wait for a collection?
We aim to make you a collection offer within a few days of you submitted a collection request, subject to your availability preferences, however, in the event of high demand, meaning that we are not able to offer you a collection for a week or so, we will send you an e-mail updating you on the waiting time for collections and will include service update information on our Service Updates page.
13. Once I have requested a collection, what happens next?
The RevaluElectricals collection, being app-based, is designed for collection efficiency optimisation in an urban environment by enabling multiple collections to be undertaken in one round in close proximity. We collect using an electric vehicle to minimise the impact to the environment.
On receipt of your collection request in the app, based on your availability preferences and your position in the queue, you will be issued with a collection offer. We will issue a collection offer to you by push notification, SMS and e-mail. In order to ensure that we can collect from as many people as possible, we will make offers to more people than we have slots for on the basis that a proportion will be unable to accept these offers.
Once you receive an offer, if that is suitable for you, please accept the offer in the “My Collections” area of the app as soon as possible. If you do not manage to accept in time, you will be placed into the pool and another offer will be made to you in line with your preferences. Should you reject the offer, your request will be placed back into the queue and you will be offered another collection slot until there is one that works for you.
If you miss the offer or take no action to engage with the offer, you will be placed back into the pool and be offered another slot in the future based upon your availability preferences.
14. I have more questions, how can I get in touch?
